Learning is built on a day to day basis.  Regular school attendance is very
important to your child's educational experience.  His or her success in
school depends on having a solid educational background - this is best
gained through regular school attendance.

Parents are important role models in developing good attendance habits
during these early school years.  Studies have shown that students with poor
attendance habits stand a greater risk of dropping out of school and often
score lower on standardize state tests, while children with good attendance
habits consistently score higher on the same tests.

Did you know that a student who is 10 minutes late each school day will miss
30 hours of instructional time during the year!  Arriving on time for school
increases a child's learning.  Mornings are less stressful with just a
little planning each night.

The Dawson County School System recently went through an accreditation
process and scored an overall rating of Operational.  The Visiting Committee
was so concerned about the poor student attendance in our county that they
singled it out for improvement.  We need all stakeholders help in
order to improve in this area for our School System, our school, and most
importantly our students.

Dear Parents

Parents of students enrolled in Georgia public schools may request to transfer to another school within the school district if the school district determines there is classroom space available and that other specific provisions, as outlined in the link provided, are met.  If a transfer is approved, the parent must assume the responsibility and associated cost of transportation to and from the school.

Classroom space may be available at certain grade levels in the elementary and middle schools. If transfer requests exceed the available space, then a lottery selection process will be utilized after the following priorities are satisfied:

1. Students who are attending a school that is in any level of Needs Improvement
2. Students who have a disability whose IEP or IAP requires placement at a particular school
3. Students who are homeless
4. Students who have programmatic needs that are only available at a certain school
5. Students entitled to attend a certain school as a result of being children of employees
6. Students who are twins or other multiples in accordance with state law

The District will accept new transfer requests for the 2011-12 school year from May 2, 2011 until 5:00 p.m. on May 17, 2011.  Parents will receive notification of approval or denial by email or standard U.S. mail on or before July 1, 2011.
Transfer Request Forms can be picked up at the school from which the student is seeking to transfer or be downloaded from www.dawsoncountyschools.org website.  Choose House Bill 251/School Choice to obtain the actual form.
Complete this form only if you are moving out of the Black’s Mill District and wish to remain at Black’s Mill or you live in the Black’s Mill district and wish to attend Kilough Elementary, Riverview Elementary or Robinson Elementary. Fifth grade students will need to complete the form if they choose to attend a middle school out of their assigned zone.
Completed form must be returned to the school of your choice by the date shown above.  No form will be accepted after this date.
Sincerely,
Cindy Kinney

Black's Mill Elementary's Relay for Life team is a proud participant in the Dawson County Relay for Life each year. Our team raises money in a number of ways throughout the school year. Teachers donate money and participate in themed lunches and denim days, and students participate by donating $1 on "Fun Days" to come to school in Western Wear and other fun outfits as well as the Silver Wars which will be in February. We would like to extend the opportunity to the families of our students as well. If you would like to make a donation to Relay for Life on behalf of Black's Mill Elementary, you may do so is several ways. You can give a cash/check donation in a marked envelope to your child's teacher or go online to www.dawsoncountyrelay.com and click on teams to find Black's Mill Elementary. All proceeds from teacher, student, and family donations go to the American Cancer Society through the Relay for Life!
